Wright Leads Seminole Women's Golf Team At Season-Opening Cougar Classic
Sept. 9, 2007
HANAHAN, S.C. - Florida State University senior Whitney Wright shot a career-low 68 to lead the Seminole women's golf team to a seventh place team standing after the first round of the Cougar Classic at Yeamans Hall Golf Course. Wright's career-low score has her in a tie for second place in the individual standings and only two strokes behind Notre Dame's Lisa Maunu who holds the individual lead after the first 18 holes of the tournament. Florida State is only six strokes behind team leader Alabama with two rounds remaining to be played in the event. The Seminoles are the defending event champions and are ranked No. 26 nationally in the 2007 pre-season poll by the editors of GolfWeek Magazine. Alabama, led by Kathleen Ekey's three-under par score of 69, and Louisiana State, led by Amalie Valle's identical score of three-under par 69, share the team lead with scores of 286. Notre Dame is in third place in the team standings with the Irish standing one stroke behind the Crimson Tide and the Tigers. Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) earned six birdies and 10 holes of par on the way to her career best single-round score. Only bogeys on holes nine and 17 held her back from shooting even lower. Wright was one-under par with two birdies and one bogey on the front nine and three-under par with four birdies and only one bogey on the back nine. Wright's previous career-low score of 71 came in the third round of the Florida State hosted spring 2007 Chrysler Challenge at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) played nearly as well and is in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings after shooting a near career-low 71 in Sunday's first round. She was two-under par with three birdies on the front nine but slipped to a one-over par total in the back nine as she endured three bogies and only two birdies. Brummett came within one stroke of tying her personal career-best of 70 which she has carded three times during her career - most recently during the first and second rounds of the 2006 Cougar Classic.
Seminole All-American Caroline Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) is in a tie for 35th place after firing a two-over par score of 74 in the first round. She started slow and was one-over par with three bogeys over the front nine and one-over par with one double-bogey and one birdie on the back nine. Westrup begins he third season at Florida State looking to become the first three-time All-American in school history. Seminole junior Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) and sophomore Lacey Agnew (Jonesboro, Ga.) are also competing for the Seminoles. The second round is scheduled for Monday and the third round of the 54 hole event is slated for Tuesday.
