May 28, 2000
SUNRIVER, OREGON - Saturday's final round of the 2000 NCAA Championships will be one the Duke women's golf team will want to forget. The Blue Devils went into the final round in seventh place (898, +34) and finished the fourth round with their highest one-day total of the season (320, +32) for 14th place. Duke began play on Saturday morning and was greeted with very high winds and chilling temperatures. It was by far the worst weather of the week. Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) and Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) posted Duke's two best scores on the day as they shot a 78 and 79 respectively. Anderson finished the championships with a 300 (+12), while Engstrom shot a 311 (+23). Sophomore Beth Bauer struggled on the final day shooting a career-worst 85 in the final round. Bauer (Cramerton, N.C.) had previously only shot 80 or more three times in two years at Duke (22 tournaments). She ended the championships with a 303 (+15) and concludes the season with two wins and nine top 10 finishes. Both Maria Garcia-Estrada (Tenerfie, Spain) and Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) battled the weather posting an 82 and 81 respectively. The 82 for Garcia-Estrada was only the third time in 11 tournaments she has shot over 80. Arizona won its second ever NCAA Championship with a 1,175 (+23) with Stanford (1,196, +44), Texas (1,198, +46), and Southern California (1,199, +47) rounding out the top four. Duke finished the championships with a 1,218 (+66) and finished in 14th place. As far as the individual competition, Arizona senior Jenna Daniels is looking like she will win with a one-under-par, after shooting a 77 on Saturday morning. Duke traveled to the 2000 NCAA Championships as the defending champion with one junior, two sophomores, and two freshman. The Blue Devils won eight tournaments in 1999-2000 including their fifth straight ACC Championship. With all five players returning and two of the top four recruits in the nation arriving, Duke will be striving for another national title in 2001. The championships were 72 holes played at the Crosswater golf course in
Sunriver, Oregon.
