Seminoles' Westrup Tied For 15th At NCAA Women's Golf Championship
May 24, 2007
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Florida State All-American Caroline Westrup carded a three-over par 75 and is in a tie for 15th place in the individual standings heading into Friday's fourth and final round of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship on the Legends Course at LPGA International. Westrup begins the final round of play with a 54-hole total of 223 and is 13 strokes behind Christel Beoljon of Purdue who holds the three-round individual lead. Westrup made a superb recovery and finished her back nine at two-under par to bring her score back to a 75. She carded three bogies and a double bogie on her front nine and made the turn at five-over par. Westrup was five over par on her first seven holes and two-under par on her final 11 holes of the afternoon. The round couldn't have begun any worse for the sophomore two-time All-ACC selection. She bogied the par four first hole and double-bogied the par five second hole to find herself at three-over par before taking the covers off of her drivers. Westrup then bogied the fifth (par four) and seventh (par three) holes before settling into her routine. Beginning with the eighth hole, she earned pars on five consecutive holes, a birdie on the 13th (par four), three consecutive pars, another par on 17 (par four) before closing her round with her 12th par of the afternoon. Westrup begins the final round looking to move up the leader board as she attempts to earn the top finish ever by a Seminole women's golfer in the NCAA Championship finals. She is looking to finish among the top 10 or higher which would set another Florida State record book standard. Seminole All-American Kristin Tamulis finished in a school record tied for 28th in the individual standings at the 2003 NCAA Championship to set the standard for Seminole women's golfers.
"This is a great course and a great test of golf," said Head Coach Debbie Dillman. "The wind is gusting to near 30 miles per hour which makes it tough. I think you can see by the scores that a lot of really good golfers are having a hard time playing the course and the conditions. Caroline did close the round in a very positive way and she is looking forward to playing well tomorrow." Westrup will tee off in the final round Friday at 12:20 p.m. along with Stacy Lewis of Arkansas and Pamela Ontiveros of Oral Roberts University. No. 1 ranked Duke, the favorite to claim their third consecutive national championship, is looking to run away and hide from the rest of the field. The Blue Devils lead Purdue by eight strokes and UCLA by 13 with 18 holes remaining to be played. |
