May 22, 2002
AUBURN, WASH.-- Freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn continued her stellar play firing a 69 on Wednesday and is tied for the individual lead at the 2002 NCAA Women's Golf Championship in Auburn, Wash. Nirapathpongporn has a two-day total of 137 and is tied with Georgia's Summer Sirmons for the individual lead, after turning in a three-under-par 69 today. Duke turned in a 293 on Wednesday and holds a 587 after two rounds of action. First round leader Arizona posted a 296 and continues to lead the competition with a 581, but the Blue Devils are six strokes back with two rounds left to play. Georgia (588), Oklahoma (588) and Florida (589) round out the top five. The Blue Devils began teeing off at 8:00 AM on the 10th tee on Wednesday. A product of Bangkok, Thailand, Nirapathpongporn registered four birdies on her final eight holes to finish the day with a 69. She began the round with a bogey on hole 10 and had three bogies in her first six holes, but rebounded with five birdies and no bogies in her final 12 holes of the day. It marks the first time in her two-year career Nirapathpongporn has posted two consecutive rounds in the 60s. Sophomore Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) rebounded from a four-over-par 76 yesterday to record an even par 72 on Wednesday. Hardin finished with three birdies and three bogies on the day, while owning a two-day total of 148. Making the biggest comeback on the Blue Devil squad was junior Kristina Engstrom. The Djursholm, Sweden native notched a 75 after kicking off the tournament with an 83. Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) finished the day with a 77 and 78, respectively. Hannemann made the turn even par but then ran in to trouble on holes one, two and three. She went eight-over-par during the span, but came back with consecutive birdie puts on holes four and five to get back to six-over-par. Duke will begin teeing off on hole one at 1:10 PM and going through 1:50 PM. --
