HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA. -- The top-ranked Duke women's golf team got off to a hot start and then cooled off a little on the back nine on its way to a tied for seventh place finish after day one of competition at the NCAA Championships in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The tournament is being played at the El Campeon course, which is a Par 72, 6,106 yards.

Leading the team competition is Oklahoma State with an opening round 293, while UCLA (295), Southern California (296), Stanford (298), Georgia (298), Texas (298), Duke (299), and Pepperdine (299) rounding out the top seven. Only 10 shots separate the top 13 teams after Tuesday's play.

Led by freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn's (Bangkok, Thailand) two-under-par 33 on the front nine, Duke turned the corner only three over par, but high winds and rainy weather led to an eight-over-par final nine on Tuesday. Nirapathpongporn was two-under-par heading into the 17th hole, but she had a bogey on the par five 436-yard hole to drop a stroke. Then a 30-minute rain delay set in. She came back out and had a bogey on the 18th hole to finish with a 33-39=72 and is in a tie for fourth position with 10 golfers.

Freshman Leigh Anne Hardin (Martinsville, Ind.) and junior Candy Hannemann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) each carded a three-over-par 75 for the Blue Devils and are tied for 32nd. Hardin turned the corner even par and then posted three bogies and no birdies to conclude her round. Sophomore Kristina Engstrom (Djursholm, Sweden) finished with a 77 and senior Kalen Anderson (Edina, Minn.) tallied a 79. Engstrom posted Duke's top score on the back nine with a one-over-par 38.

On the day, Hannemann and Nirapathpongporn each posted a team-leading three birdies, but Duke finished the final two holes seven-over-par. Engstrom's 77 included two double bogies and two birdies.

UCLA's senior Laura Moffat leads the individual competition with a three-under-par round of 69 with Maria Boden (Oklahoma State) and Lindsey Wright (Pepperdine) are right behind her with a 70 after day one. After these three, there are 10 golfers tied for fourth at even par.

The Blue Devils won't have much time to rest as they will tee off bright and early in the morning with a 7:30 AM start off the 10th tee. Duke will once again be paired with Arizona and Tulsa. Arizona finished the day tied for 11th, while Tulsa is tied for 18th.
