Duke Holds Nine-Stroke Lead at ACC Women's Golf Championship
April 16, 1999 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Duke women's golf team secured a three-over-par 291 in Friday's first round of the 1999 ACC Women's Golf Championship, jumping out to a nine-stroke lead. The Blue Devils are shooting for their fourth-straight ACC title and the seventh in school history.
Florida State stands second at 300, Wake Forest is third at 303 and North Carolina is fourth at 313.
Three players are tied for the individual lead at 71 (one-under). Duke Freshman Beth Bauer, the nation's top-ranked player, joined senior teammate Jenny Chuasiriporn and FSU senior Amy Bond in a tie for first. Florida State senior Erika Iding is fourth at 72, while Wake Forest freshman Kathryn Brenny stands fifth at 73.
North Carolina junior Marcy Newton, who collected a 79 in the first round, recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 12th hole.
The event is being held at the Grandover East Golf Course for the second straight year and the third time in the last four seasons. Grandover East is a 5,950-yard, par-72 layout in Greensboro. The ACC Championship will continue on Saturday and Sunday with tee times both days starting at 7:48 a.m.
