Lady Seahawk Classic NC State Wins Lady Seahawk in Comeback Fashion WALLACE, N.C. - The NC State women's golf team erased an eight-shot deficit to capture the team championship by a narrow one-stoke margin over UNC Greensboro at the 2008 UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic Tuesday at River Landing Golf Course. The Wolfpack (305-300-291=896) matched its lowest round of the year with a final round three-over 291 to earn the program's seventh team title and first since garnering the Papa John's Collegiate (Feb. 19-21, 2006) in Miami Lakes, Fla. Under cloudy skies and cool temperatures, UNCG (303-294-300=897) finished second on the Par 72, 6,183-yard layout. Host UNC Wilmington finished third at (305-295-300=900) and Campbell came in fourth at (296-302-304=902). NC State senior Stephanie Derrey fired a 1-under 71 and junior Lauren Doughtie and sophomore Emily Street fashioned a pair of 73's to help NC State climb from fourth place after two rounds. Doughtie finished third overall with a score of +3 (76-70-73=219) and Derry wound up tied for fourth at +4 (74-75-71=220), her best career finish as a collegiate golfer. Connolly Paces Terps at Lady Seahawk Golf WALLACE, N.C. - Kerri Connolly led University of Maryland players with a tie for 35th individually as the Terrapins posted a 15th-place finish in the team standings Tuesday at the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational women's golf tournament. Connolly, a freshman from Duxbury, Mass., posted her lowest 54-hole score of the spring season with a 231. She led the Terrapins on the scoreboard for the third time this season after shooting rounds of 77-75-79. Senior Katie Trotter tied for 41st with a 233 total that included a 75 in the second round, which was completed early Tuesday morning due to darkness. Senior Kelly Calkin had the low score of the final round and the Terrapins' best 18 holes of the event with a 74 in Tuesday's final round. She tied for 61st at 236. Hilary Lawson and Carla Wasienko each finished with 244 totals and tied for 80th individually. As a team, Maryland finished with a 942 total with its 309 in the final round being the best of the three.
Canes and Cardinal Classic
Weintraub Leads Miami at Canes and Cardinal Classic Miami Lakes, Fla - University of Miami senior Hagen Weintraub finished a team-high 11th to lead the Hurricanes at the Canes and Cardinal Classic on Tuesday at Don Shula's Golf Resort in Miami Lakes. She was consistent over the three rounds, shooting 73, 74 and 73 to finish her final home tournament with 220 strokes. The Hurricanes put together their strongest showing in the third round, combining to shoot 295, as Miami finished in eighth place of 14 teams with a three-round total of 895. Co-host Louisville led from the start, and claimed the team title with a combined 871 strokes, including the individual tournament win from Cindy LaCrosse (67-74-71=212), who finished four-under par for the tournament and four strokes ahead of the runner-ups. Miami freshman Christina Hirano tied for 18th place (73-75-75) with a three-round total of 223, while fellow Hurricane freshman Maria Ronderos also placed among the top 25 with a 224 total (78-75-71). She finished strong, firing off a one-under par 71 in the third round.
Crimson Tide Classic Boston College Wraps Up Regular Season Action at Crimson Tide Classic Tuscaloosa, Ala. - The Boston College women's golf team, competing against some of the top-ranked teams in the country, finished in 11th place out of 12 on Sunday at the Crimson Tide Classic. The Eagles combined for a total score of 975 over the three rounds. Sophomore Natalie Draganza led the team for the third-straight competition, scoring a 239 (79, 84, 76). Senior Katie Napleton followed with a 26-over-par performance, shooting a 242. Sophomore Meghan Martinek (245), freshman Kelsey Rockey (249) and senior Lara Smilnak (254) also placed for the Eagles. Alabama turned in a school record 54 hole score of 861 (-3), taking top team honors at the Classic. Alabama junior Kathleen Ekey finished with a 54 hole score of 203 (-13) to win the tournament.
