Field Hockey Players Aughinbaugh and Doton Named First Team All-Americans
Nov. 25, 2002 The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced its 2002 National All-American teams today and three Demon Deacons were recognized. Senior midfielder Heather Aughinbaugh and junior midfielder Kelly Doton were chosen as first team All-Americans, while sophomore forward/midfielder Kelly Dostal was named to the second team. All three players were named first team All-South Region selections last week, which allowed them to be considered for the national honors. The Demon Deacons won their first NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship on Sunday with a 2-0 win over the Penn State Nittany Lions. Aughinbaugh was a second team National All-American in 2001 and this season she was named All-ACC for the third straight year. She was also selected to the NCAA All-Tournament team. The Denver, Pa. native wraps up her collegiate career with 43 goals, which ties her for third in Wake Forest history with longtime teammate Jennie Shelton (1998-2001). She also finishes with 115 career points, also good for third all-time. Doton, the ACC Player of the Year in 2002, was a second team National All-American last season. This year, she was named All-ACC for the second year in a row and was named to the ACC All-Tournament team. The junior from Greenfield, Mass. was also named to the NCAA All-Tournament team for the third time in as many seasons.
2002 marks the first All-American nod for Dostal, a sophomore from Hatfield, Mass. The ACC¡¦s leading scorer in 2002, she finished the season with 16 goals and nine assists. She was named All-ACC and was chosen as the MVP of the ACC Tournament.
