Five Blue Devils Earn STX/NFHCA Division I All-Region Honors
Nov. 18, 2002 The Duke University field hockey team placed five members on the 2002 STX/NFHCA All-South Region team, as announced by the NFHCA on Monday, November 18. The Blue Devils, winners of 14 games this season, last placed five players on the All-South Region team in 1999. Johanna Bischof (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Sarah Wright (Bethesda, Md.) received first team recognition. Bischof, a second team selection last year, finished her sophomore season with seven goals and ten assists. Wright, a senior back and All-ACC selection, anchored the Blue Devils defense and ended her career with 60 consecutive starting assignments. Junior Kim Gogola (White House Station, N.J.) joined sophomores Suzanne Simpson (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Gracie Sorbello (Davis, Calif.) on the second team. Gogola, Simpson and Sorbello all rotated between the midfield and back positions for head coach Liz Tchou. Gogola finished the year with four goals and one assist, while Simpson had two goals and five assists. Sorbello, an All-ACC selection, posted six goals, including two game-winners, to go along with three assists.
Duke's successful season included snapping a nine-game ACC regular season losing streak, a four year ACC Tournament drought, the school's fourth NCAA Championship bid and the second NCAA Championship win in school history.
