Nov. 2, 2001
Friday's Other Game CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-seeded Maryland will play for its fourth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey title Sunday after defeating Virginia 4-1 on Friday in the tournament's second semifinal game. The Terrapins will face second-seeded Wake Forest, which defeated North Carolina 3-2 in overtime in Friday's first semifinal game. "Virginia is a team of tremendous athletes, and I think we were able to use our combination of speed, skill and aerobic energies to never give them an opportunity to get into the game," Maryland coach Missy Meharg said. "I'm very, very pleased with the performance and really excited for the team as we prepare to play in the finals." Maryland, now 16-3 on the season, scored three goals in the first half and added another on a penalty stroke in the second. The Terrapins* first goal came from senior Megan Kelly, who scored on an assist from Rachel Hiskins following a busted penalty corner attempt with 17:16 remaining in the first half. Freshman Colleen Barbieri scored the second goal, then added on assist on the next one, by junior Carissa Messimer. With 16:29 remaining in the game, senior Autumn Welsh scored Maryland's fourth goal on a penalty stroke. She also took one in the first half, but it was saved by Virginia goalkeeper Emily White. Eighth-ranked Virginia (13-7) avoided a shutout with a late goal. Senior Jessica Coleman caught Maryland goalkeeper Kerry Hearsey away from the goal to score with 5:31 to play. Maryland, tied for the top spot in the national rankings, and Wake Forest, ranked No. 3, will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday to decide the league's 19th annual championship. The game, at Francis E.
