![]() 2006 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Team Announced Nov. 1, 2006
GREENSBORO, N.C. - For the first time in league history, two goalkeepers are featured on the 2006 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Team. Defending ACC and national champion Maryland leads all teams with five selections, with all six league schools represented on the 17-member unit. Co-regular season champion Wake Forest followed with the second-most picks at four. Duke received three nods, while both Boston College and Virginia placed two apiece. North Carolina rounded out the all-conference team with one. In just its second year in the league, Boston College picked up its first field hockey individual superlative in sophomore Bob Dirks. The forward became the fi rst Eagle to garner the league's top accolade as offensive player of the year. A native of Malden, Netherlands, she currenlty leads the conference in four statistical categories - shots (87), shots per game (4.58), goals (19) and goals per game (1.00) - with her goals per game tied for 10th in the NCAA. In addition, Dirks ranks third in the ACC in points (41) and points per game (2.21). She also has scored six game-winning goals this season. Maryland's Paula Infante has been selected ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight year. The midfielder from Santiago, Chile, has been a force to be reckoned with for the top-ranked Terrapins, who posted an 18-1 record, nine shutouts and a 0.65 goals against average this season. Infante was also instrumental on the offensive side of the ball as she currently ranks second among league leaders in shots (82), shots per game (4.32). The senior, who has won two of the three defensive awards since its inception in 2004, is first Terrapin to earn multiple player of the year accolades.
For the second year in a row, Jennifer Averill of Wake Forest has been tabbed ACC Coach of the Year by her peers. Averill
led the Demon Deacons to a share of the regular-season title and a No. 2 seed in this week's ACC Tournament, posting a
17-1 record and a 4-1 mark in ACC play. The honor marks the fifth of her career and her fourth in the last five years. She
also earned the league's top coaching distinction back-to-back in 2002-03.
