Virginia Defeats Duke In The Opening Game Of The 2001 Field Hockey Championship

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Fourth-seeded Virginia defeated fifth-seeded Duke 3-1 Thursday afternoon in the opening game of the 2001 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship at Francis E. Henry Stadium. With the win, Virginia (13-6) advances on to meet top-seeded Maryland Friday at 7 p.m. In Friday's first game, second-seeded Wake Forest plays third-seeded North Carolina, the host team.

Virginia, the No. 8 team in the nation, got on the board with 14:22 remaining in the first half when sophomore Katie Nicholson scored from the field, assisted by junior Rosie Walker. The Cavaliers scored again three minutes into the second half on a penalty corner. Senior Carrie Goodloe had the goal, assisted by senior Jessica Coleman. The assist was Coleman's first of the year and she added another with 2:31 remaining in the game, when she passedthe ball from the right of of the goal and junior Cara Unterkofler scored to give the team a 3-0 lead.

Duke, ranked No. 15 in the nation, scored with 39 seconds remaining on the clock on a penalty corner. Senior Angie North had the goal, assisted by seniors Liz Bateman and Kim Susko.The Blue Devils are now 9-9 on the season.

Virginia and Duke have met in the first-round game in each of the last three years. Virginia won 2-0 in 1999 and 2-1 in overtime in 2000.
