North Carolina's Van Sickle Named ACC Player of the Week
Oct. 16, 2012
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina senior defender Caitlin Van Sickle has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Van Sickle scored the game winner in overtime as the second-ranked Tar Heels beat No. 5 Virginia on Saturday in a conference match in Chapel Hill. Van Sickle scored off a rebound after the initial shot was saved on a North Carolina penalty corner in the seven-on-seven overtime.
The Wilmington, Del., native assisted on the first Tar Heel score of the day, which put North Carolina up 1-0 in the fifth minute. The Tar Heels held that lead for 17 minutes before Virginia tied the game, and North Carolina’s next lead didn’t come until overtime.
In addition to the offense she provided, Van Sickle played every minute of the game on the Tar Heel defense, which held Virginia 2.5 goals below its season average.
With the win, North Carolina improved to 15-1 and 4-0 in ACC play and returned to No. 1 in the nation in the updated NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
