Maryland's Emma Thomas and North Carolina's Charlotte Verstraten Named ACC Field Hockey Co-Players of the Week
Oct. 7, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Emma Thomas, a senior from High Wycombe, England, and Charlotte Verstraten, a freshman from Berg En Dal, Netherlands, have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Co-Players of the Week. Thomas is a back for the top-ranked Maryland Terrapins, while Verstraten is a forward for the No. 4 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Thomas scored the game-winning goal in Maryland's 4-3 overtime win over 10th-ranked Virginia. The game-winner came in the 81st minute and was the first of her career. She assisted on the game-tying goal that forced overtime with just over four minutes remaining on the clock. Verstraten scored her first career goal in the 20th minute to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead over No. 3-ranked Wake Forest. In the second half, she assisted on the goal that broke the 2-2 deadlock for her third assist of the season.
The Terrapins will return home this weekend to host Duke and Pennsylvania. Maryland hosts the Blue Devils at 1 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, the Terps will face Penn at 2 p.m. North Carolina will travel north to face Boston College on Friday at 4 p.m. Two days later, the Tar Heels will face Yale in a neutral-site match held at Boston College.
