Wake Wails ASU With 10 Second Half Goals
September 24, 1998 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team (4-4) scored 10 goals during the second half to beat Appalachian State (0-5), 12-0, at Kentner Stadium on Wednesday evening. It was the Deacons fourth consecutive win after losing four of their first five. Hat tricks were pulled off by the two Deacons tonight as sophomore Jenny Everett (Rutland, Vt.) and freshman Nienke van Ruiten (Bussum, Netherlands) each scored three goals. Six other players had one goal each. Leading 2-0 at halftime, Wake Forest scored four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to break open a tightly contested game. Van Ruiten scored two of her goals during that stretch. Appalachian State only managed five shots the entire game, while Wake Forest had a season-high 44 shots. The Deacons open Atlantic Coast Conference play this Saturday, Sept. 26 at home. Wake Forest will take on 10th ranked Maryland beginning at 1 p.m. in Kentner Stadium.
