Duke University and head coach Liz Tchou announced today the hiring of two new assistant field hockey coaches for the 2002 season. Sally Bell, an assistant coach at Richmond last season, and former Duke standout Lori Stark will join Tchou and top assistant Cindy Werley to comprise the coaching staff.

Bell's coaching resume includes 14 years of experience at various positions, including an eight-year tenure in Victoria, Australia and a four-year stop with the Coastal City State League. She received Level 3 accreditation, the highest level accreditation in Australia, in 2001 and has served on numerous coaching committees.

Her playing experience included a stint from 1979-98 as a member of the Victorian National Hockey League Team along with spots on the Brunei Veteran's Team in 1999 and the Western Australian Veteran's Representative Team in 2001. In addition to her coaching experience, Bell has been a teacher at various levels since 1985.

Stark enjoyed an outstanding career in the late 1980's with the Blue Devils. She ranks first in Duke history with a .860 save percentage and is second all-time with 528 saves. As a freshman in 1986, Stark set school records with a 0.50 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. Stark received All-America Honorable Mention, All-ACC and All-South Region accolades as a junior. She was also an All-South Region selection as a senior.

Upon graduating from Duke in 1990, Stark went on to serve for six years in the U.S. Army working Military Intelligence in Central America and as a Bomb-Squad Commander in New Jersey. From 1996-99, Stark was a Bomb Tech for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire-Arms. For the past three years, she has been a police officer in Concord, California.

The Blue Devils, coming off a 9-9 season, open the 2002 campaign on Saturday, August 31 when they take on La Salle at 3:00 p.m. The contest with the Explorers will be played at Temple University.
