Conway Promoted To Associate Head Field Hockey Coach
June 19, 2001
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Nick Conway has been promoted from assistant coach to associate head coach of the North Carolina field hockey team, head coach Karen Shelton announced Friday. "Nick has been a very valuable and loyal assistant for the past six years," Shelton said. "I wanted his title to reflect the team coaching concept and partnership that we have established, plus reward him for outstanding service to our program. He has earned this distinction." Conway is in his seventh season as part of the Carolina coaching staff. A native of London, England, he attended the University of Birmingham, where he played on the team that won the national championship in 1992. At Birmingham, he also coached the University Ladies Indoor Team to a national championship in 1994. As a Tar Heel assistant, he helped direct UNC to NCAA titles in 1995, `96 and `97. Conway played in the 1993 Junior World Cup and has been a part of two silver medal European Cup teams. A member of the 1998 World Cup training squad, he has represented England Seniors nine times. He has been an assistant coach for several U.S. Field Hockey Association women's teams, including the squad that competed in the Americas Cup in Jamaica in March. He currently is serving as head coach of the Southern Charm, the Chapel Hill-based entry in the United Airlines Field Hockey League, an elite summer league sponsored by the USFHA. "Working at the University of North Carolina and coaching with Karen Shelton has been a great experience for me," Conway said. "This combination of field hockey at the highest level and an outstanding university setting is something I couldn't find anywhere else. I'm proud to be a part of this program, and I'm honored by the promotion." The Tar Heels, NCAA runners-up in 2000, open the 2001 season on Aug. 25 against Connecticut in Skidmore College, N.Y.
