CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Carolina field hockey team won't spend quite so much time packing and traveling this season as last. In 2001, the Tar Heels are scheduled to play 11 regular-season home games, nearly double the six on the 2000 schedule. In addition, the Tar Heels will host the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Nov. 1-2 and 4.

As is the norm, this season's UNC schedule is among the country's toughest . Thirteen regular-season games are against teams that finished last season ranked in the nation's top 15, and a total of six games are against teams ranked in the top five in the final 2000 poll. UNC will meet defending NCAA champion Old Dominion twice, Maryland (#3) once, Wake Forest (#4) twice and Michigan (#5) once. Carolina finished the 2000 season ranked No. 2 in the nation and fell to ODU in the NCAA title game to wrap up the season 20-4.

"I'm excited about this season's schedule," said UNC coach Karen Shelton, who is heading into her 21st year with the team. "It's just as challenging as usual, but unlike last year we'll be home a great deal. I'm also excited about hosting the ACC Championship for the first time since 1997."

Carolina opens the 2001 season Aug. 25 against Connecticut in Skidmore College, N.Y. The Tar Heels' first home game is Sept. 1 against Penn State.
