Field Hockey Announces Class of 2005

DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University head field hockey coach Liz Tchou has announced the signing of seven high school student-athletes to national letters of intent. Katie Anthony, Johanna Bischof, Morgan Dall, Taryn Monjo, Chrissy Murphy, Suzanne Simpson, and Gracie Sorbello will join the Blue Devils for the 2001 season.

"This is the largest class that I have ever recruited," said Tchou. "All of them have different strengths and personalities. Hopefully the upperclassmen will integrate them into the Duke culture. They are a bunch of good kids. Gracie (Sorbello) is a very athletic and is extremely intelligent. Chrissy (Murphy) is very fast and will be a great addition to our program."

Anthony, a forward from Oklahoma City, Okla., lettered four years in field hockey at Casady School. She was a three-year starter while being named captain and SPC All-Conference during her senior year. She played in the USFHA Regional Tournament and was named a USFHA alternate for the National Tournament.

Bischof, a forward from North Vancouver, B.C., was a first team Regional All-Star during her junior and senior year at Carson Graham Secondary School. She was a three-year captain and played on the third place team in the US National Festival in West Palm Beach, Fla. She also played on the third place team in Cal Cup Super Division in 2000.

Dall, a goalkeeper from Basking Ridge, N.J., was a two-year member of the varsity field hockey team at Ridge High School. She was named captain and was a State Sectional Finalist in 2000. During her senior season, she recorded a .682 goals against average and a .918 saves average. Dall was named first team All-County (Somerset), first team All-Conference, first team All-North Jersey, first team All-State Group II, and third-team All-State during her senior season. She was a two-year member of the Futures Level One State Elite Team, a member of the New Jersey Regional Team, and a member of the Futures National Elite Team.

Monjo, a midfielder from San Diego, Ca., was a three-year starter at Serra High School. She led her team to a 26-1 record in 2000. In 1999, she led her team with 29 goals scored and 22 assists while being named first team San Diego Eastern League, first team C.I.F., first team San Diego Union Tribune All-County, and first team San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic. She has participated in the National Hockey Festival in 1999 and in the Cal Cup in 2000.

Murphy, a forward from St. Louis, Mo., played field hockey for The Taft School in Watertown, Conn. She was a tri-varsity captain in field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse during her senior year and was a two-time All-America nominee. She was also named All-League and All-New England All-Star.

Simpson, a midfielder from North Vancouver, B.C., was a four-year member of the field hockey team at Argyle Secondary School. She is currently the youngest player on the Canadian Junior National Team and will be traveling to Argentina for the Junior World Cup this summer. Simpson, a two-year captain of her high school team, was also a member of Canada's Summer Games under-21 team. In 2001, she received the Di Popowich Rookie Award, which is given to the top under-18 player in British Columbia.

Sorbello, a back from Davis, Ca, was a three-year starter at Davis Senior High School. She set a school record with 34 goals her senior year. She also scored 31 goals her junior year and 23 as a sophomore year. Sorbello was named field hockey and lacrosse captain her senior year and was named Most Valuable Offensive Player in field hockey her junior and senior season. She was a second team All-America and All Westside League selection in 2000. Sorbello is currently a member of the under-18 National Team.

The Duke field hockey team finished the season with an overall record of 7-12 and lost in the first round of the ACC tournament, 2-1, in overtime to Virginia.
