DURHAM, N.C.-- Courtney Sommer of the Duke University field hockey team has been awarded a Postgraduate Scholarship for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at the university or professional school of her choice as announced by the NCAA Scholarship Committee.

Sommer, a senior defender from Tulsa, Okla., was named second team All-America and an NFHCA Division I National Academic All-America after leading the Blue Devils in scoring with nine goals and nine assists for 27 points this past fall. She started in 74 consecutive games for the Blue Devils while scoring 13 goals and 30 assists for 56 points in her career. Her 30 assists rank third on the all-time Duke list.

Sommer, a three-time All-ACC, All-South Region, and All-America selection, will graduate in May with a degree in Biological Anthropology and Anatomy. She was also the recipient of the 2001 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship.

The Duke field hockey team finished the season with an overall record of 7-12 and lost in the first round of the ACC tournament 2-1 in overtime to Virginia.

The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who maintain at least a 3.000 cumulative grade-point average (4.000 scale) and perform with distinction in varsity competition. The NCAA annually awards 174 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically and are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
