Terps' Field Hockey Team To Be Honored By Maryland Senate
March 28, 2000 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Senate will honor the 1999 national championship University of Maryland women's field hockey on the floor of the senate with a resolution honoring the team in Annapolis on Wednesday. There will be a presentation of a Senate of Maryland Resolution to head coach Missy Meharg and the Terps presented by President of the Senate, Senator Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr., and Senator Arthur Dorman who is the senator representing the University of Maryland College Park. The ceremony is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. The team will also be honored in resolution presented from the House of Delegates by the Speaker of the House, Casper Taylor, and delegates Barbara Frush, Pauline Menes, and Brian Mow who also represent the University of Maryland. Missy Meharg, who led Maryland to the 1999 NCAA Division I national championship, was named the Dita/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year. In addition to the national championship, Maryland won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and won a school-record 24 games. Meharg has compiled a 188-68-9 record (.726) record in 12 seasons as Maryland's head coach. The 1999 NCAA championship was Meharg's second at Maryland, making her one of only four coaches to win multiple NCAA titles. She has now been selected as the Division I Coach of the Year three times during her career (1991, 1993 and 1999).
The Terps finished with a 24-1 overall record and a 6-0 mark in ACC play. The Terps set school records for wins in a single season (24), fewest losses in a single season (one) and consecutive victories (22). Maryland won the ACC title with a perfect 4-0 record during the regular season and was 2-0 in winning the conference tournament championship.
