COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A record-setting total of nine Maryland field hockey players were selected to the 2000 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Squad, having attained a 3.3 minimum cumulative grade point average and meeting the additional criteria of either being a "starter" or "key reserve." The nine student-athletes marks the Terps' highest total ever, and tied Yale and only trailed Monmouth (10), West Chester (10) and Bucknell (10) for the most NCAA Division I honorees in the nation.

A three-time academic squad member, senior Carla Tagliente (Cortland, N.Y.) adds the honor to her four-time All-America and two-time Academic All-America accolades.

Second-time honorees include sophomore Angie Klingerman (Bloomsburg, Pa.), juniors Carol Senkler (Hockessin, Del.) and Kateri Simon (Fallston, Md.) and All-Americans Caroline Walter (Reilingen, Germany) and Autumn Welsh (Macungie, Pa.).

Sophomore Carissa Messimer (Mountaintop, Pa.) and juniors Kristy Palchinsky (Leonardtown, Md.) and Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) and were all named to the squad for the first time in their respective careers.

The academic awards come to the Terrapins after a 19-4 season and an appearance in the national semifinals for the second consecutive season. Maryland also captured its third ACC title in a row in 2000.
