Seven current or former Tar Heel field hockey players have earned spots on the 22-member U.S. National Team following a week-long selection camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

Named to the squad were rising UNC seniors Kristen McCann and Jana Toepel, as well as Carolina graduates Kate Barber, Nancy Pelligreen, Peggy Storrar, Cindy Werley and Jana Withrow. While the others are National Team veterans, McCann made the squad for the first time.

A select group of 16 team members, including Barber, Pelligreen, Storrar, Toepel and Werley, will travel to Buenos Aires on Jan. 17 for a Four Nation Tournament with Spain, New Zealand and host Argentina.

The 22 members and four alternates on the national team represent the foundation for the 2000 Olympic team, pending the U.S.'s qualification at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament March 24-April 2 in Milton Keynes, England. If the U.S. places in the top five of the ten-team tournament, thus qualifying for the Games, the 16-member Olympic team will be chosen June 10-15 in Chula Vista.
