The Duke University field hockey team, 14-8 on the season, advanced to the second round of the 2002 NCAA Field Hockey Championship with a 2-1 win over James Madison on Saturday. Wake Forest defeated California, 8-0, in the first game of the day at Wake's Kentner Stadium. Duke will take on the Demon Deacons on Sunday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Duke jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and overcame a late charge by James Madison to earn the second NCAA tournament win in school history. The Blue Devils other victory was a 4-2 win over Virginia in 1992.

Kim Van Kirk (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) opened the scoring in the first half when she scored off a penalty corner 11:55 into the contest. The goal was Van Kirk's 13th of the season with Gracie Sorbello (Davis, Calif.) earning an assist on the play.

Sophomore Chrissie Murphy (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied Duke's second goal at 26:30 when Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa.) slipped a pass by two JMU defenders to the open forward. Murphy beat JMU goalie Kiernan Raffo for her sixth goal of the season. JMU could not come back in the second half, despite a goal from Valerie Cohen and outshooting Duke 7-2 in the half. Duke's Christy Morgan made eight saves, while JMU keeper Kiernan Raffo made six.

Wake Forest was led by ACC Player of the Year Kelly Doton, who scored three goals and added two assists. Sophomore Claire Lawhon added two goals and All-ACC senior Heather Aughinbaugh chalked up three assists. In getting their 16th straight win, the Deacons outshot the Golden Bears by a 24-0 margin.

The Blue Devils and the Deacons will face off for the third time this season tomorrow. Wake Forest has won the first two meetings. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
