Duke Advances With 2-1 Win Over Connecticut

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A tip-in goal from senior Marian Dickinson off Laura Suchoski’s initial shot sent the No. 8 Duke field hockey team to a 2-1 win over fifth-ranked Connecticut in first round action of the 2008 NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at the University of Maryland’s Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

The Blue Devils moved to 15-5 on the season, advancing to their sixth Elite Eight in the past seven seasons as both teams weathered a rain-soaked contest.

Terps Field Hockey Takes Down Albany in NCAA First Round, 4-2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The first step is out of the way for the Maryland field hockey team, which defeated Albany, 4-2, on Saturday. Senior Susie Rowe scored twice and assisted on one while senior Danielle Keeley put home the eventual game-winner early in the second half.

With the victory, Maryland will advance to meet Duke, which defeated UConn, 2-1. The Atlantic Coast Conference rivals will square off Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park.

Virginia Holds Off JMU 2-1 in NCAA Tournament

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Virginia field hockey team (14-8) held off in-state rival James Madison (18-3) 2-1 Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Third-year Traci Ragukas scored what proved to be the game-winner with 0:02 left to play in the first half. First-year Floor Vogels also scored for UVa.

The Cavaliers move on to play host Wake Forest (20-3) in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Demon Deacons defeated American 7-1 in the first round.

Wake Forest Moves to NCAA Quarterfinals with 7-1 Win over American

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-seeded Wake Forest field hockey team defeated American 7-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest (20-3) will now face Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia (14-8) in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Demon Deacons' 7-1 victory was by far the largest margin of victory across the board in this year's opening round matches. One-seed Maryland's 4-2 win over Albany and Princeton's 2-0 win over Penn State were the second highest marks. In the ACC, Duke advanced with a 2-1 win over Connecticut and will play Maryland on Sunday. 2007 NCAA Championship winner North Carolina fell 3-2 to Michigan State in the Iowa regional.

UNC's Season Ends With NCAA Loss

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The North Carolina field hockey team's 2008 season ended Saturday with a 3-2 loss to host Michigan State in NCAA Tournament play at Ralph Young Field. The first-round loss left seventh-ranked UNC's record at 14-6 for the year. The 10th-ranked Spartans improved to 17-5 and will face Iowa Sunday for a spot in the field hockey final four.

"When you get to this point in the season, everyone is a good team," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "It was a great clash today. As a coach, I'm proud to be a part of those kinds of contests. Unfortunately, we just came out a little short."
