Maryland Rallies to Beat Virginia, 3-2 in Overtime, in ACC Field Hockey Championship
Nov. 8, 2009 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Top-seeded Maryland scored three unanswered goals, including the game-winner in overtime, to beat third-seeded Virginia, 3-2, in the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship at the University of Virginia Turf Field in Charlottesville, Va. The league title is the second straight for the Terrapins and eighth overall. The win improves Maryland to 20-0 for the first time in school history and clinches the league's automatic qualifying bid to the 2009 NCAA National Tournament. The loss drops Virginia to 18-3 overall. Despite a Terrapin advantage in shots (10-9) and penalty corners (5-4), the Cavaliers opened a 2-0 lead in the first half. Freshman defender Charlotte van den Broek scored her second goal is as many games to put the Cavaliers ahead, 1-0, in the 15th minute off a tip-in from the left post. Sophomore All-ACC midfielder and All-Tournament team pick Inga Stöckel fed the pass to van den Broek for the assist. In the 23rd minute, freshman midfielder Tara Puffenberger scored on a similar tip-in, this time on a Michelle Vittese assist from the right post, to put Virginia up, 2-0. Virginia carried the game's momentum into the halftime locker room, but Maryland began to shift the tide in the 56th minute when junior three-time Offensive Player of the Year Katie O'Donnell--the tournament Most Valuable Player--scored her 22nd goal of the season to cut the Cavalier lead to 2-1. The Terps tied the score less than two minutes later when senior All-ACC forward Nicole Muracco scored her league-leading 27th goal of the season to knot the game, 2-2. Neither team was able to put itself in position to win the game throughout the remaining 13 minutes to send the game into overtime, the ninth such championship game in ACC field hockey history. The extra session didn't last long, as Maryland freshman midfielder Megan Frazer scored the game-winner--her 12th score of the season--in the 72nd minute. Senior Defensive Player of the Year Emma Thomas was credited with the assist. Maryland's title is the second in a row for the Terps, who defeated Wake Forest, 4-3, for the championship in 2008. Overall, the Terps have claimed eight ACC crowns, all of which have come under the guidance of 2009 Coach of the Year Missy Meharg. Maryland out-shot Virginia, 23-11, and won eight penalty corners, compared to Virginia's five. Senior goalkeeper Alicia Grater made five saves for the Terps in 72 minutes of action. For Virginia, junior goalkeeper Kim Kastuk logged all 72 minutes between the pipes and notched six saves. Additionally, North Carolina freshman midfielder Kelsey Kolojejchick was selected as the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the game.
