Box Score

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The first seed Wake Forest Demon Deacons (17-1) downed the third seed Maryland Terrapins (18-3), 4-1 on Friday evening at Turf Field in the second semifinal game of the 2003 ACC Field Hockey Championship. Junior Kelly Dostal led all players with three points scoring a goal and assisting on another to led the Deacs past the Terps.

Wake Forest scored the game's first goal off a penalty corner in the 15th minute of play. Sophomore Ariel Meyers took the loose ball and found the back of the net for an early 1-0 Demon Deacon lead.

The Deacs would get on the board again late in the first half to increase their lead to 2-0. Junior Kelly Dostal found freshman Kristi Harshman for her third goal of the season. The assist for Dostal was her fourth this year.

It took the Terrapins only 26 seconds to cut into the Wake Forest lead as sophomore Jackie Ciconte scored her first goal of the tournament and team tying 17th on the season.

In the second half, Wake Forest increased their margin to two goals for the second time in the game. In the 58th minute of play, sophomore Maeke Boreel netted her fifth goal of the season and first of the championship. It would be all the scoring they would need as keeper Katie Ridd and the Demon Deacon defense shut out the Terps in the second half allowing only five shots.

Wake Forest's Kelly Dostal would add a late goal with 40 seconds remaining to solidify the victory for the Deacs.

With the win, Wake Forest advances to their third consecutive tournament final in search of their second straight ACC Field Hockey championship. The Demon Deacons will square of against the Duke Blue Devils in Sunday's championship game at 12:00 pm at Turf Field. It will be the first time in tournament history that these two teams will square off in the championship game.
