Duke Downs Virginia 5-2 in First Day of ACC Field Hockey Action

DURHAM, N.C. -- The 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship began with the No. 4 seeded Duke Blue Devils defeating the No. 5 seeded Virginia Cavaliers 5-2 at Williams Field on the Duke University campus in Durham, N.C. At halftime, the Blue Devils led the Cavaliers 2-1 on two unassisted goals by forward Katie Grant. Midfielder Cara Unterkofler scored Virginia's goal in first half play on Shannon La Vigne's assist. In the second half, Duke's Kim Van Kirk scored two goals, while Katie Grant scored her third goal of the evening, tying the ACC Tournament Individual Single Game goal record. Virginia's Sarah York scored for the Cavaliers in the second half. Duke improves its record to 13-7 while Virginia drops to 9-11. The Blue Devils will face the No. 1 seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Friday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. No. 2 North Carolina will take on No. 3 Maryland to lead off second-round Championship play at 4:00 p.m. on November 8.
