#20 Deacs Bounce #13 Duke in Double OT, 3-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The 20th-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team prevailed 3-2 in double overtime to bounce 13th-ranked Duke from the 1998 ACC Championships on Thursday at Virginias University Hall Turf Field. With the loss, fifth-seeded Duke concludes the season with a 10-10 record, while Wake Forest improves to 11-8 overall. Senior forward Mary Jo Reider (Boyertown, Pa.) put Duke on the board first with an unassisted goal at 16:35 of the first half. The Demon Deacons responded with a goal by Kelly Malinoski at 33:37 to tie the game at 1-1 at the intermission.

Junior forward Corey Ceccolini (Branford, Conn.) put the Blue Devils up 2-1 in the second half with a goal at 22:35. With time running out in regulation, Wake Forest got a score from Nienke van Ruiten to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The game remained tied after one overtime period, when Lisa Andries scored the game winning goal 2:14 into the second overtime to lift Wake Forest to the win.

Ceccolini along with Reider and sophomore Courtney Sommer (Tulsa, Okla.) were Dukes representatives on the 1998 ACC All-Conference team. Ceccolini finished the season as Dukes top scorer with a career-best 14 goals and six assists for 35 points. Reider had four goals and one assist for nine points on the season. She now stands seventh in both career goals (25) and career points (71). Sommer provided nine assists and registered two defensive saves on the year.

The fourth-seeded Demon Deacons advance to face top-seeded Virginia (15-3) in Fridays semifinal at 2:30 pm.
