DURHAM, N.C. - The No.2 Virginia Cavaliers defeated the No.13 Duke Blue Devils, 2-1, in a match-up of nationally-ranked ACC teams on Saturday at the East Campus Turf Field.

Virginia senior Meridith Thorpe (St. Louis, Mo.) scored the go-ahead goal for the Cavaliers with 11:41 remaining in the contest off an assist by senior Michelle Vizzuso (Fairfield, N.J.).

In an evenly-played first half, Duke senior Mary Jo Reider (Boyertown, Pa.) opened the scoring with a goal at the 16:18 mark off a penalty corner. Virginia answered with a goal by Vizzuso with 5:23 remaining in the half, and the teams went to the half with a tied game.

However, Virginia took the offensive in the second half, out-shooting the Blue Devils 8-1 and registering 13 penalty corners.

Virginias concludes the regular season with a 14-3 overall record and wraps up conference play with a 4-0 mark, while Duke falls to 10-8 overall and finishes 0-4 in league play. The Cavaliers extended their winning streak to nine games.

Duke next faces No.4 Princeton on Monday, November 2 at 7 pm at the East Campus Turf Field in the regular season finale.
