Blue Devils Hold On Against Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. - The 13th-ranked Duke field hockey team scored three first half goals and then held off a second half comeback by Appalachian State for a 3-2 road win on Tuesday night at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Blue Devils improve to 10-7 on season, while the Mountaineers fall to 5-12.

Duke opened the scoring with 28:41 left in the first half when senior Emily Ford (Harwich, Conn.) posted a goal with an assist by classmate Mary Jo Reider (Boyertown, Pa.). The Blue Devils got into the scoring column again on a goal by junior Corey Ceccolini (Branford, Conn.) with 16:55 left in the opening half with a double assist by Ford and sophomore Courtney Sommer (Tulsa, Okla.). Sophomore Jennelle Moore (East Harwich, Conn.) tallied Duke=92s final goal of the evening with 9:0= 9 remaining in the first half.

In the second half, Appalachian made a comeback bid with goals by Dana Fabretti and Chanley Layton, but Duke goalkeeper Jenn Robb (McLean, Va.) made three saves on the night to preserved the Blue Devil win.

Duke returns to ACC action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Virginia at the East Campus Turf Field at 1 pm.
