COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team handily defeated Villanova, 5-1, at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Friday evening. The contest was the Terps' final regular season game, as they head into the postseason with a 17-1 record.

"I'm really proud of the team," said 20th-year Maryland head coach Missy Meharg. "The leadership from the seniors this season has been exceptional. To have a 17-1 regular season record is really a tribute to their character."

"[Despite the steady rain], the field conditions were good and the team played well. I thought it was a very good, competitive game."

Senior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) shined in her final regular season home game as a Terp, scoring Maryland's first two tallies. In the 10th minute van Leeuwen netted a shot from the end line off of a successful penalty corner play with the assist coming from junior Ellen Ott (Schwenksville, Pa.).
