UNC Field Hockey Falls At Virginia, 2-1
October 18, 1998 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The North Carolina field hockey team dropped its third-straight game Sunday with a 2-1 loss at Virginia. The sixth-ranked Cavaliers improved to 11-13 and 2-0 in the ACC while the Tar Heels fell to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Virginia scored first, on a penalty corner with 14:20 to play in the first half. Meridith Thorpe scored, assisted by Michelle Vizzuso and Laura Lindsay, on the Cavaliers' third penalty corner of the game. The Tar Heels tied the score just 2:35 later on a penalty corner of their own. Nancy Pelligreen got the goal, assisted by Jana Toepel. Virginia's Meredith Elwell scored 1:47 before halftime on an assist from Thorpe for the final goal of the game. Carolina was awarded seven corners in the second half, including one with two seconds to play in the game, but was unable to score. Game summary: Virginia 2, UNC 1 Goals: V-Thorpe (M.
