Suchoski Nets Game-Winner As Duke Defeats Old Dominion, 2-1

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior captain Laura Suchoski scored the go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute Sunday afternoon as the No. 5 Duke field hockey team won its sixth straight and knocked off Old Dominion 2-1 at the Powhatan Sports Complex. Duke improved to 12-3 (2-2) and picked up its second victory of the year over the Lady Monarchs, who the Blue Devils also edged 1-0 at home Sept. 21.

The winning streak is the Blue Devils’ longest since the 2005 season, a six-game stretch that spanned from Oct. 11 through Nov. 3 for a team that eventually played in the national championship game.

Suchoski’s unassisted goal midway through the second half put the Blue Devils up 2-1 after Old Dominion had tied it up in the first. Suchoski sent in the eventual game-winner, a hard blast from the top of the circle past ODU keeper Kelly Driscoll for her second of the season.

Carolina Shuts Out No. 6 JMU For Weekend's Second Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team earned its second shutout of the weekend Sunday afternoon, beating No. 6 James Madison 1-0 at Francis E. Henry Stadium. UNC senior Kate Scholl scored the game's only goal in the 57th minute and the Tar Heel defense held JMU scoreless for the first time this season to boost Carolina's record to 12-3 overall. James Madison, which had won a school-record 11 consecutive games, fell to 13-2.

On a Carolina penalty corner with just under 14 minutes to play in the game, senior Britt van Beek's initial shot hit another UNC player and bounced off. Scholl, a back from East Greenville, Pa., gathered the ball and shot it past JMU goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins from the left side of the cage. The goal was Scholl's second of the weekend and also her second of the season, and it gave the Tar Heels an advantage they wouldn't give up.

Terps Field Hockey Shuts Out Delaware, 7-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - On a football Sunday, the Maryland field hockey team won by a touchdown, shutting out the visiting Delaware Blue Hens, 7-0. The Terrapins were led by sophomore Katie O'Donnell, who scored three goals, and senior Emma Thomas, who tallied two.

After mounting a second-half comeback to earn a 2-1 win over Old Dominion on Friday, the Terps (14-2, 3-1 ACC) wasted little time getting on the board Sunday. Just more than three minutes into the game, Maryland capitalized on one of five first-half penalty corners, as Emma Thomas (High Wycombe, England/Wycombe) took a pass from senior Susie Rowe (London, England/Colfe's School) and sent it rattling into the cage.

Just over two minutes later, Rowe rocketed another shot on goal which was deflected away by Delaware goalie Nikki Rhoades. The bouncing ball was controlled by senior Sarah Scholl (Center Valley, Pa./Southern Lehigh), who popped it into the near side of the cage to put Maryland up, 2-0.
