Wake Forest 4, Cal 3

BERKELEY, Calif. - Trailing 3-2 with less than seven minutes to go in regulation, the third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team scored back-to-back goals in the final two minutes of play to take down California, 4-3, Friday night at Maxwell Family Field. Senior Chelsea Cipriani scored her second game-tying goal to knot the score at 3-3 and sophomore Regina Shannon knocked in the game winner in the final minute.

With the win, Wake Forest improves to 8-4 on the season, while Cal drops to 8-4.

Down 2-1, the Demon Deacons emerged with the same drive to open the second half and after a Cipriani shot was saved, the Deacs' offense continued to claw its way in Bear territory. After Kim Romansky's shot was saved, Michelle Kasold found the ball and knocked in the game-tying goal at the 45:09 mark for a 2-2 score.

North Carolina 4, William & Mary 2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The North Carolina field hockey team beat host William & Mary 4-2 Friday afternoon at Busch Field, running its streak of wins to 15 but ending its string of shutouts at nine. The top-ranked Tar Heels, playing without three starters who are competing as part of the U.S. National Team this week, led 4-0 before giving up a pair of goals to the host Tribe (6-8).

UNC (15-0) had not allowed a goal since a 7-2 win over Villanova on Sept. 8 and now shares the NCAA Division I record of nine consecutive shutouts with Old Dominion and Virginia.

"In the first half, we played excellent defense even without our three national team members," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "In the second half we also played well for a period, but we lost a little composure late in the game and it cost us some goals. We were disappointed to give those up, not just because it cost us the record but also because we know we can defend better than we did."

Maryland 4, Old Dominion 1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked University of Maryland field hockey team turned up the pressure late in the game to put away No. 10 Old Dominion, 4-1, at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Friday evening. With the win, the Terrapins improved to 15-0 and extended their streak to 19 consecutive wins dating back to the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament. Old Dominion's seven-game win streak was brought to an end as the Monarchs fell to 8-6.

Just two minutes into the contest, Hanna Warren put Old Dominion on the board with a penalty corner goal assisted by Shannon Mobley. The early Monarch lead marked only the second time the Terps trailed all season, previously having to overcome a 1-0 deficit at Duke on Oct. 6.

Maryland evened the score in the 16th minute, as junior Susie Rowe (London, England) dished a hard pass from the top of the circle to senior Janneke van Leeuwen (Hilversum, Netherlands) on the end line to the left of the goal. Van Leeuwen executed a hard flick over the goalkeeper for the score, her eighth of the season.
