Carolina Shuts Out Boston College, 4-0

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Second-ranked North Carolina tied the Atlantic Coast Conference record for consecutive shutouts and stayed undefeated on the season with a 4-0 field hockey win over ninth-ranked Boston College Saturday at Francis E. Henry Stadium. The Tar Heels improved to 12-0 overall and 3-0 in ACC play with their ninth straight shutout, while B.C. fell to 9-3 overall, 1-3 ACC, with all three losses coming to teams currently ranked in the nation's top three.

Three of the Tar Heels' goals came in the first half, and all three were on penalty corners. Senior Melanie Brill scored two of those, including the gamewinner just three minutes into the action, and senior Illse Davids had the other as UNC capitalized on three of its four first-half corner opportunities.

Brill's first goal, at the 3:06 mark, came on an assist from junior Katelyn Falgowski, who made the stick stop and pushed the ball left to set up a shot for Brill. UNC also got the ball into the cage on its second corner of the day, but the shot was ruled illegal and the goal was waved off.

Duke Falls to No. 1 Maryland, 3-0

DURHAM, N.C. - Duke was stride for stride with No.1 Maryland in the first half, but fell behind in the second half and lost, 3-0. A goal by forward Melanie Frazer with only 16 seconds remaining in the first period of play ended up being the game-winning score for the Terrapins.

The 14th-ranked Blue Devils (6-6, 0-4 ACC) came out with a high level of intensity in the first half. Duke looked organized defensively and senior defender Lauren Miller stepped up numerous times to stop developing attacks from the Maryland forwards. The Terrapins had a slight advantage in shots and corners in the first period, but Duke was able to respond with several scoring chances of its own.

The Blue Devils best scoring opportunities came off two penalty corners. Survilla had one shot from the top of the circle that just sailed over the cage. The senior forward had another blasted attempt that looked destined for the left side of the cage, but it was just nipped by senior goalie Alicia Grater. Grater was diving to the ground and somehow got her glove up in time to stop the ball.
