CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Six different players scored for the Tar Heels Sunday afternoon as the University of North Carolina field hockey team beat visiting Richmond 8-0 at Navy Field. Seniors Nancy Pelligreen and Moira McFadden each scored twice, while sophomores Kristen McCann and Jana Toepel and freshmen Katie McDonald and Abby Martin all added goals.

The win was junior goalkeeper Nicole Frey's second shutout of the weekend, following a 3-0 win at Wake Forest on Saturday. For the game, Carolina took 40 shots on goal to Richmond's 2. The Tar Heels took 12 penalty corner shots to Richmond's four.

"We want to play better, stronger and smarter and I felt like we did make some progress this weekend, starting in the second half of the Wake game," Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "Today, Moira made some good runs that resulted in goals. Abby Martin had a nice goal. (Sophomore back) Pembry Keller made some nice runs. It was a good day for us."

"For us, this was a chance to learn," Richmond coach Shelly Behrens said. "I wanted us to come in and compete with a very good team and I think at times we did that."

Carolina, ranked second in the nation, is now 9-1 overall. The Tar Heels will travel to play at James Madison Friday at 5 p.m. and at Maryland Sunday at noon. Richmond, 4-7, plays on Wednesday at William & Mary at 4:30 p.m..
