The fourth-ranked Demon Deacons received goals from five different players and blanked Appalachian State, 5-0, on Wednesday night at Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest improved to 7-4 on the season and picked up its second straight shutout, while the Mountaineers dropped to 2-9 overall.
Appalachian State received its only penalty corner of the game and took its lone shot of the night in the opening minutes of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Mann had no problem making the save to spark Wake's domination of the game.
Liza Casella took the Deacs first penalty corner and connected to Michelle Kasold, who tipped it to Liz Fries, who would knock in the Deacs' first goal at the 10:49 mark. Less than a minute later, Wake increased its lead to 2-0 after Regina Shannon tapped in the ball just outside the net for her second goal of the season.
The Deacs took six more shots before Minou Gimbrere extended the lead to 3-0 at the 23:47 mark.
No. 10 Boston College lost its fourth game of the season to Providence, 3-0, on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007. The Eagles were shutout for the second time this season and their record dropped to 8-4. The Friars improved to 8-4.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle for the two teams. The ball was played mostly in the middle of the field for the first 19 minutes. The Friars were able to get on the board when sophomore forward Nellie Poulin notched the first goal of the game on a breakaway. Poulin received the ball at the 50-yard line from junior forward Ali Kornfeld and broke free to make the score 1-0 in the 19th minute.
At the end of the first half, the Eagles trailed by one. Each team recorded three shots and BC goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz tallied one save.
