Toepel's Goal Helps UNC Down Duke, 3-2

DURHAM, N.C. - In a matchup of nationally-ranked teams, No. 13 Duke was edged by No. 2 North Carolina on Wednesday at the East Campus Turf Field. Tar Heel sophomore Jana Toepel scored the game-winning goal with 15:00 remaining in the game. It was the ACC opener for both squads. Duke goes to 5-4 (0-1 ACC) on the year, while North Carolina improves to 7-1 (1-0 ACC).

North Carolina opened the scoring when freshman Abby Martin scored off a penalty stroke with 2:37 remaing in the first half.

Duke rebounded with two goals by junoir Corey Ceccolini (Brandford, Conn.) early in the second half. The goals were Ceccolinis eighth and ninth of the season.

North Carolina responded with a goal by freshman Abbey Woolley with 26:05 remaining in the contest.

Duke next faces ACC-rival Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Oct. 6 at 7pm.
