Sept. 14, 2008 Rowe Scores Four, O'Donnell Sets Assist Record as Field Hockey Cruises COLLEGE PARK, Md. - All-American senior captain Susie Rowe scored four goals as the No. 1 Maryland field hockey team cruised to a 10-1 win over Northwestern on the second day of the Terrapin Invitational at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Sunday. Sophomore All-American Katie O'Donnell broke the school record for assists in a game, handing out six in the contest. Susie Rowe's (London, England/Colfe's School) first goal came less than five minutes into the game on a penalty corner. All four of her goals were off penalty corners, while Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) also assisted on each of her goals. Junior Alexis Pappas (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) was credited with an assist, as well, on three of Rowe's tallies, while sophomore Alicia Morawski (Gross Point, Mich./Grosse Point South) posted her first-career point on Rowe's final score in the 52nd minute. No. 6 Blue Devils Defeat Drexel, 4-1, In Home Opener DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 6 Duke field hockey team kicked off the 2008 home slate with a 4-1 win over Drexel Saturday afternoon at Williams Field. The Blue Devils improved to 4-2 on the season and saw a huge offensive surge in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals after halftime and out-shooting the Dragons 22-6 in the contest. Duke was led by a pair of tallies from sophomore Casey Beyel, who notched the third and fourth Blue Devil goals on the afternoon.Drexel had gotten on the board first with an early goal just 10:58 into the contest, as the Dragons' leading scorer Susan Ciufo converted in front of the goal to put Drexel up 1-0. No. 8 Cavaliers Beat No. 15 Louisville 4-2 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The eighth-ranked Virginia field hockey team (6-1) defeated Kent State (3-2) by a score of 4-2 Sunday at the University Hall Turf Field. Four different Cavaliers scored, including first-year Floor Vogels, second-year Kaitlyn Hiltz, fourth-year Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn and fourth-year Lucy Meyers. Vogels gave Virginia a 1-0 advantage when she scored on a penalty corner at 14:17. Hiltz pushed the ball out to Pein Hulsebousch, who tapped it over to Vogels for the goal. Hiltz then made it 2-0 less than three minutes later with her second goal of the season off an assist from first-year Paige Selenski. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Wake Forest field hockey squad defended its undefeated record over the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Indiana on Sunday at Kentner Stadium. Indiana opened scoring in the game when it converted on its first penalty corner attempt. Brittney Hacken landed the solid strike 25 minutes into the contest, supported by pusher Alina Valentina and setter Mutsa Mutembwa. Tar Heels Pick Up Weekend's Second Shutout WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The North Carolina field hockey team closed out a weekend of play at the Vonnie Gros Classic without allowing a goal, beating host West Chester 3-0 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the event. Illse Davids and Danielle Forword, both juniors from South Africa, combined for all three Tar Heel goals as UNC improved to 4-2 on the year. The Golden Rams fell to 3-2 after going 1-1 at their event. In record-high temperatures that hit 94 degrees, the game was scoreless until the 28th minute, when Forword scored from 12 yards out on a pass from Davids. After a 1-0 score at halftime, UNC got its second goal at the 39:41 mark, when Davids sent a penalty stroke past West Chester goalkeeper Joelle Zarefoss, who made 19 saves on the day. Carolina's final goal came just over three minutes later, when Forword put in another score, assisted by Davids.
