![]() American Tops Wake in OT, 2-1
September 11, 1998 RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Sage Asteak scored her second goal of the game 11:46 into overtime to lead American to a 2-1 victory over Wake Forest Friday afternoon on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus.
Wake Forest struck first when freshman Nienke van Ruiten scored off a feed from senior Kelly Simon to put the Demon Deacons up 1-0. American tied the score late in the first half off a penalty corner. Sophomore Ana Pineyro passed to Asteak with 3:14 remaining before intermission.
Wake Forest had several good scoring chances near the end of regulation but could not capitalize. American took advantage ending a stretch of more than 12 minutes without either team getting a shot on net with a barrage of scoring chances at close range. Junior Jhoanna Savino put a shot on goal that junior goalkeeper Meaghan Nitka saved but Asteak was in good position to put the rebound into an open net and give the Eagles the win.
The victory improved the Eagles to 2-1 entering a showdown with Old Dominion on Sunday. The Demon Deacons, which lost their third consecutive one-goal game, play at Virginia Commonwealth (2-0) on Sunday. Wake Forest 1 0 0 - 1 American 1 0 1 - 2
