No. 2 Deacons Defeat No. 6 Duke 4-1 in ACC Opener WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated No. 6 Duke 4-1 in the first match of the Atlantic Coast Conference slate on Saturday at Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest's Hilary Moore was the first to score in the game, taking a cross from Michelle Kasold just over ten minutes into the contest. Duke's Megan Deakins knotted the score just before halftime, converting on a penalty corner.
UNC Picks Up Third Shutout, 4-0 Over Penn State WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Four different players scored as the third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat No. 11 Penn State 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Vonnie Gros Classic, hosted by West Chester University. The Tar Heels improved to 3-2 with the win while Penn State fell to 2-3. The game was a rematch of the 2007 NCAA Championship, which UNC won 3-0 last November to claim the program's fifth national title. Just shy of seven minutes into the game, senior captain Britt van Beek gave UNC the only goal it would need against the Nittany Lions. The score was her fifth of the season, the second gamewinner. In the 17th minute, redshirt freshman Elizabeth Stephens deflected a cross from junior Illse Davids into the goal, which put the Tar Heels up 2-0 at the break. No. 8 Virginia Outlasts Kent State 4-2 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The eighth-ranked Virginia field hockey team (4-1) outlasted Kent State (3-1) Saturday, defeating the Golden Flashes 4-2 at the University Hall Turf Field. Four different Cavaliers scored, including Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn, Lauren Elstein, Paige Selenski and Traci Ragukas, who celebrated her birthday. Kent State got on the board first and scored just 3:10 into the game. On their first offensive possession, the Golden Flashes marched inside the circle and Nicole Leach tallied the goal on an assist from teammate Laurie Wilkins. With Kent State scoring first, it marked the first time all season Virginia has trailed in a game. No. 1 Terps Upset by No. 7 Syracuse in Field Hockey, 2-1 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A late goal in the final eight minutes gave No. 7 Syracuse the upset over top-ranked Maryland, 2-1, on the fist day of the Terrapin Invitational at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Saturday afternoon. It is the first loss of the season for the Terps, who also suffer their first loss of the 12-year tournament. Both teams refused to let up in the first half, with the first 35 minutes ending in a 0-0 stalemate. The teams were almost even, with Maryland (4-1), who took over the top spot in the national polls this week, attempting eight shots in the period, while the Orange (5-0) had six. Both teams were awarded five penalty corners.
