ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The second-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team opened its 2007 campaign with a 3-0 loss to 10th-ranked Iowa at Michigan's Ocker Field in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The Hawkeyes (1-0) capitalized on two corners in the second period and added another goal late in the game to ensure their victory.

Wake Forest (0-1) took over on offense to open the second period as sophomore Kim Romansky took a shot and the Deacs had back-to-back corners, but Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley stopped any chance of getting on board.

Iowa put up two goals on back-to-back corners of its own in a span of two and a half minutes to take a quick 2-0 lead. The Hawkeyes added their third and final goal in the 66th minute after Lauren Pfeiffer's penalty stroke sailed high over Duffield's blocker.

With the game ending, senior Chelsea Cipriani took her third shot of the game off of Melissa Martin's corner, but Munley made her fifth save.

Both teams played the ball back and forth for more than 15 minutes to open the first half, before Iowa took the game's first two shots at the 16:30 mark and the 17:00 mark. Sophomore Hilary Moore was able to take a shot on frame, but Munley kept it out of the net.

Wake was able to take three more rapid shots, including two by Liz Fries, but the Deacs could not find room to score as the first half ended in a scoreless tie.

The Demon Deacons out-shot the Hawkeyes 13-11, while Duffield made four saves and Munley recorded five saves. Juniors Michelle Kasold and Fries also took three shots each along with Cipriani.

Wake Forest continues action at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Sunday as it faces host Michigan at 2 p.m. ET.
