Katie Scanlon Named Assistant Rowing Coach At Virginia
July 9, 2001 CHARLOTTESVILLE - Katie Scanlon, former head coach of the women's rowing team at the University of New Hampshire, has been named an assistant coach in the University of Virginia women's rowing program. "I'm delighted to have someone of Katie's experience join our program," UVa women's head rowing coach Kevin Sauer said. "She brings a wealth of international experience and success to Virginia." Scanlon rowed collegiately at New Hampshire for four years and served as a coaching intern at Harvard during the 1992-93 academic year. She was the head coach at New Hampshire from 1996-98 where her team finished in the top three at the Champion International Regatta. Scanlon was a member of the United States Rowing Team from 1993-98. She was a silver medalist in the eight and the four at the 1993 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, a silver medalist in the eight at the 1994 World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., and a gold medalist in the four at the 1995 World Championships in Tampere, Finland. She started sculling in 1997 and was in the ninth place quad at the 1998 World Championships in Koln, Germany. Scanlon is a 1992 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a bachelor's degree in English and women's studies.
Virginia finished seventh at the 2001 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The Cavaliers have finished in the top seven in each of the five NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. UVa finished fourth in 1997, third in 1998, second in 1999 and third in 2000.
