CHARLOTTESVILLE-- - University of Virginia rower Barb Sheehan is a 2000 first-team All-America selection by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA).

Sheehan, a sophomore from St. Catharines, Ontario, was a member of Virginia's first varsity eight crew that finished third at the 2000 NCAA Championships and won the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship. She was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection this spring.

Sheehan was also a first-team selection to the CRCA's All-Central Region Team and UVa's Sara Garrett was a second-team selection. Garrett is from San Clemente, Calif., and was also a member of Virginia's first varsity eight crew. She graduated from Virginia last month.

UVa's Kirin Surpless earned a National Scholar-Athlete Award from the CRCA. Surpless graduated from Virginia last month and has been accepted into the Masters of Accounting program at UVa's McIntire School of Commerce. She is from Reston, Va., and was a second-team selection to the 2000 GTE Academic All-District III Spring At-Large Team. Surpless was a member of Virginia's second varsity eight crew that finished third at the 2000 NCAA Championships. She was a member of the Cavaliers' first varsity eight crew that won the ACC Championship in May.

Virginia finished third in the team competition at the 2000 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. UVa has finished in the top four in the team competition at each of the four NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The Cavaliers finished fourth in 1997, third in 1998 and second in 1999.
