Three Blue Devil Rowers Named National Scholar-Athletes
June 11, 2002 Three Duke University rowers were named National Scholar-Athletes, as announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Joanna Hingle, an All-America last year, senior Maren Betts-Sonstegard and junior Kim Meyer were among the 16 rowers from the South Region honored by the CRCA. The National Scholar-Athlete award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. The criteria include meeting eligibility rules as defined by her institution, participating in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility, participating in at least 75% of the season's races in the varsity boat and the student-athlete must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA through the fall semester of the current season.
Hingle is maintaining a 3.88 GPA in Civil Engineering, while Betts-Sonstegard has a 3.82 in Biology and Meyer is an English major with a 3.71 grade point average.
