May 5, 2000
DURHAM, N.C. -- Two Duke freshman rowers- Katie Lakin and Joanna Hingle- were selected to compete at the U.S. National Team Freshman Camp at the Arco Training Center in San Diego, Calif. The duo will be vying for positions on the United States' Nation's Cup team, led by former U.S. Junior National Team coach Barb Kirch. The camp, which selects approximately 30-40 athletes from around the nation, begins June 1st. "It's a tremendous opportunity for both of them," Duke head coach Robyn Horner said. "It's also great for our program. It will give them great experience and allow them to see some of the top rowers in the country. Hopefully, they can take the things they learn there and apply it to our program here at Duke." Lakin, a freshman from Mathews, Va. was named an All ACC rower this past spring. She rowed for four years at Mathews High School and led her team to the Stotesbury Gold in 1998 and National's Gold from 1996-98. Hingle, a freshman from Alexandria, Va., is a former All-Metro rowing squad selection and 1998 Rowing Selection Camp competitor at Thomas Jefferson High School. She also earned scholastic honors for the U.S. National team (bronze medal in 1998 and gold medal in 1999). Duke's youthful crew finished fourth in the ACC rowing championships in
April.
