Duke Varsity Eight Finishes Sixth In Grand Final At Lexus Central Sprints

The 20th-ranked Duke women's varsity eight placed sixth at the Lexus Central Sprint with a time of 6:47.6 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on Sunday, May 19. The Blue Devils finished behind four highly ranked team, #3 Ohio State (6:33.4), #5 Michigan (6:37.5), #10 Michigan State (6:37.8) and #15 Notre Dame (6:43.2), in the race. The Duke varsity eight team is made up of Kareen Murray (C), Amelia Booth, Katie Lakin, Joanna Hingle, Melissa Buckmiller, Kim Meyer, Natalie Zervas, Maren Betts-Sonstegard and Caroline Diemar. In other action, Duke's varsity four claimed second place in the Petite Final, eighth overall, with a time of 7:57.3. The varsity four is comprised of Marion Penning (C), Hilary Boe, Christina Richardson, Andy Murray and Sara Miller.
Selections for the 2002 NCAA Championships will be made on Tuesday, May 21. This year's championship is being held at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, Indiana.
