Blue Devils Place 11th Out Of 21 Teams At Lexus Central/South Region Sprints

The Duke University rowing team earned an 11th place finish in the team points race at the 2003 Lexus Central/South Region Sprints. The Blue Devils were 11th overall and fifth among South Region teams competing at Lake Melton with four points. Ohio State claimed the Lexus Cup with 76 team points.

Duke's Novice Eight, coming off a first place finish in the semifinals on Saturday, finished third in Sunday's N8+ Grand Final. The Blue Devil crew completed the course in 6:40.5, just behind Virginia (6:38.5) and second place finisher Ohio State (6:39.8).

The Varsity Eight placed third in the V8+ Petite Final, behind Iowa and Notre Dame, on Sunday. The crew of Jessi Batzell (c), Amelia Booth, Katie Lakin, Joanna Hingle, Natalie Zervas, Mae Joyce Gay, Abby Hawkins, Kim Bailey and Melissa Buckmiller posted its fastest time of the year, completing the 2000m course in 6:31.4. Iowa took the Petite Final with a time of 6:27.2 with the Fighting Irish finishing second at 6:30.9.

Duke's Varsity Four finished fifth in the V4+ Petite Final. The Blue Devil crew completed the race in 7:31.9, 1.4 seconds behind fourth place finisher Texas. Virginia (7:22.0) won the event with Tennessee (7:26.5) and Notre Dame (7:29.6) placing second and third respectively.
