The Duke University Novice Eight delivered a strong showing at the first day of the Lexus Central/South Region Sprints to advance to tomorrow's grand final at Lake Melton. The Novice Eight finished second in its heat and won the semifinals race to move into the grand final.
The novice crew opened the day with a second place finish in heat 1 of the novice race. The Blue Devils time of 6:46.9 was the second fastest of the 16 novice crews competing, with Virginia registering the only faster time.
In the semifinals, Duke's Novice Eight posted the best time among the 12 crews competing to advance to tomorrow's grand final. The Blue Devils finished the course in 6:46.7, winning their semifinal heat by 2.3 seconds over Michigan. Tomorrow's Novice Eight grand final is scheduled to begin at 10:20 a.m.
The Varsity Eight placed third, behind Ohio State and Texas, in its opening race with a time of 6:38.9 to reach the A/B Semifinal. The crew of Jessi Batzell (c), Amelia Booth, Katie Lakin, Joanna Hingle, Natalie Zervas, Mae Joyce Gay, Abby Hawkins, Kim Bailey and Melissa Buckmiller then placed fifth with a time of 6:38.2 in the semifinal. The Duke Varsity Eight will next compete in the petite final which is schedule to begin at 9:10 a.m. tomorrow.
Duke's Varsity Four finished fourth in its opening heat with a time of 7:45.4. The crew of Marion Penning (c), Devon MacWilliam, Elise Richards, Julia Gelfand, Crystal Wakulich then placed sixth in their semifinal race with a time of 7:46.7. The Varsity Four will race in tomorrow's petite final at 9:50 a.m.
